Update on an Olive Branch Recommendations

In 2018 the Kalapa Council (the previous Board of Shambhala) hired An Olive Branch, a Zen-based consulting group that works with spiritual communities in conflict and crisis. The Kalapa Council asked An Olive Branch to explore and document past harm that occurred in Shambhala, advise how it could be prevented in the future, and make recommendations for steps that could be taken to heal our community. In March 2019, the Shambhala Interim Board received and then published An Olive Branch’s full report and recommendations to the community.

The Shambhala Board has recently reviewed the recommendations that were received from An Olive Branch and put together a comprehensive update on all activities responding to these recommendations.

Wickwire Holm Report

Released February 3, 2019

The Kalapa Council engaged Wickwire Holm in July 2018 to conduct a third-party investigation of claims of sexual misconduct within the Shambhala community (described in the July 20 Community Letter). Subsequently, the Interim Board took over management of the engagement of Wickwire Holm from Shambhala’s legal counsel, Alex Halpern, and worked directly with an investigative attorney with the firm, Selina Bath. Ms. Bath was the investigator and writer of the reports. IB members met with her a number of times to understand the scope and progress of her work and her timeframes. At all times, the IB did not attempt to influence her investigation or her findings, and she was steadfast in her adherence to that independence. The Claims Investigation is the product of that work and represents her independent findings.

On February 3, 2019, the Shambhala Interim Board released the findings of the Wickwire Holm report to the Shambhala community.
